the art of packing

guess what!

It’s Italy {packing} week!

I’ve been sporadically pinning packing tips over the last few months and surprisingly I’ve come up with a pretty great and inspiring compilation.

{all about packing light via}

{how to put together a packing list via a pair and a spare}

{loving this carry-on packing list via triple max tons}

I don’t know if the art of packing gets any lovelier than these illustrated packing lists below…

{illustrations via this blog post on and the book “Lists: To-dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists’ Enumerations from the Collections of the Smithsonian Museum”

in the spirit of keeping organized, here’s my packing list:

c a r r y * o n

  • Sketchbook
  • Books {2} + some magazines {I plan on picking up some Italian and Dutch publications while there}
  • Camera
  • Headband {just in case hair’s entirely unruly when we land and it needs to go up in a pony}
  • Make-up
  • one outfit change

Generally, when I travel I try not to check any luggage but for this trip we’re planning on checking one bag between the two of us so we are less limited when bringing stuff back.

c h e c k e d * l u g g a g e

  • Toiletries {perfume, toothpaste, shampoo + conditioner, hair serum}
  • Hair Straightner + adapter
  • Walking/Hiking shoes
  • Flats {2} Sandals {1}
  • Jewelry
  • Clothes {currently working on exactly what, but I’m trying to make the most versatile + lightweight suitcase possible. for me, this isn’t easy.}

Now if I could only get my suitcase to look like and be as organized as this prettiness…

So now I’m curious about you friends! Are you an expert packer? What are your most essential carry-on items?
